He Jian, born in 1978 in Guangyuan, Sichuan Province, graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2000 and subsequently remained at the academy as a faculty member. His distinctive artistic expression is influenced by the 14th-century murals of the Yongle Palace in Shanxi Province. At first glance, his works appear weathered, resembling "aged" artifacts in need of restoration—an effect achieved by layering brushstrokes on extremely thin Xuan paper. Employing the ancient and traditional technique of gongbi (meticulous brushwork), He Jian depicts contemporary life in China alongside personal childhood memories, imbuing his art with a uniquely textured sense of time. With a consistent style characterized by wit that bridges ancient and modern, he has participated in numerous domestic exhibitions and garnered widespread attention from the international art world.
